Italy need to win and gain a bonus point, which is near on mission impossible based on what Ireland, has shown to date and also because of the effort that was needed for their bonus point win over the Americans only 5 days earlier.

These sides face each other on a regular basis since Italy was brought into the 6 Nations and have faced each other 19 times with Ireland winning 16 of those matches and Italy 3. They have also met 3 times at World Cups the first was in 1995 where Italy won 22-12, the second was In 2003 where Ireland dismantled Italy 61-6 and the last WC match was in 2007 where Ireland got by the Italians 23-20. Ireland has won their last 15 matches against the Italians, with an average winning margin of 12 points.

Ireland have been playing very well especially in defence which should see them win well today, Ireland have scored 99 points in their 3 matches and allowed only 28, they have a wealth of talent in their backline and should have too much class across the park tonight against what should be a tired Italian side. Italy have a chance today but playing only 5 days before this clash while Ireland have had a full 8 days to get ready should count against them, they had to use a lot of energy in beating the USA and that should be telling come the second half of this match tonight.

I can’t see Italy beating Ireland tonight at all, the one area that Italy could prove troublesome against this Irish side is in the scrum but should Ireland scrum well then any advantage for Italy is gone, It’s a shame because I do think that Italy could of gone well here but to have to win this game with a bonus point is a bridge to far for them and the longer the game go’s the more desperate this Italian side will become. Italy has some real defensive problems in their midfield and Ireland have the players to take advantage of it, I think Ireland will win here by a decent margin in the second half, Final score Ireland 28 – Italy 13.
